The Shalimar Presbyterian Church was chartered in 1955 as a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (US), later to merge into the reunited Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1983. Its facilities sit on the corner of Meigs Drive & 4th Avenue in Shalimar, Florida. It is one congregation among the 44 churches of the Presbytery of Florida which runs from the Alabama border on the West to Madison, just east of Tallahassee. The Presbytery’s offices are in Chipley, Florida (www.presbyteryofflorida.com).
A "pastor-size church,” SPC is currently welcoming 50-75 members regularly in Sunday worship. Open to growth, SPC members value the close-knit family community that only a small church can offer. No one stays a stranger here.
However you choose to participate, we hope you'll indicate your presence with us so we may welcome you and answer questions. Consider attending a visitors lunch on any first Sunday after the service. And of course, coffee is available after the services! SPC supports a wide variety of mission projects including: • Cold Night Shelter (Temporary housing for the homeless in churches) • Caring and Sharing (Filling in the gap with food ministry) • PSALMS 91.1 FM Radio Ministry • Thornwell School (Developmentally delayed) • Heifer Project, Int’l. (International economic development) • Shelter House (DV Shelter) • Waterfront Mission (Homeless) • Children in Crisis, Okaloosa County • Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree (Children of incarcerated prisoners) • One Great Hour of Sharing (Hunger, Disaster, and Self-Development) • Joy Gift Offering (Presbyterian Colleges and Ministers in Need) • Peacemaking Offering (Ministries of Reconciliation) • Pentecost Offering (Children at risk, youth and young adults) • Women’s Birthday & Thank Offerings (Health Ministries) • Tutoring Ministry (ASL Sign Education & tutoring for Jr. & Sr. Highs) • Out of this World Ministries (Home Repair)
To become a member of SPC one need only confess belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Baptism in any Christian Church is accepted as valid in the PCUSA.
Sacraments: Baptism into the church of Jesus Christ through membership in SPC can be accomplished in a variety of ways from sprinkling through immersion at the choice of the applicant. Application for membership proceeds from an initial conversation with the pastor, a vote of the session, and finally to public profession of faith before the congregation.
The Lord's Supper (Communion; Eucharist) is celebrated weekly. A formal distribution in worship is held on the second Sunday of the month and on special holidays. On other weeks, an informal communion celebration is held at the conclusion of worship for all who wish to parake. Communion is open to all baptized Christians including baptized children who are being instructed in the meaning of the sacrament. If you are in doubt about whether you may receive, come anyway. Jesus will be waiting for you there!
Growth in discipleship: It is anticipated that members will participate in Bible Study and other educational opportunities that will lead to a deepened faith and response to God's grace by service to the world in mission and ministry beyond the church walls. All members pitch in to make SPC an inviting, welcoming, functioning and accountable church with opportunities for service in areas that match one's passions. Classes for all ages are offered on Sundays at 9:45AM. Adult Bible Study is offered on Wednesday evenings at 6:30PM. Small groups meet in homes most Sunday evenings. Learn more or see the schedule to the right. --> Cursillo Participation: SPC encourages its members to attend a three-day short course in Christianity called Cursillo. In this effort, we partner with the Alabama Presbyterian Cursillo (www.alpresbyteriancursillo.org). This experience offers an opportunity to get in touch with the love of Jesus and of the Christian community ini a unique way. Dogwood Acres Camp: SPC regularly sends its children and youth to the Presbytery of Florida's camp and conference center in Vernon, FL. Varieties of summer camping activities offer environmentally sensitive experience of 500 acres of nature in a Christian setting. (www.dogwoodacres.org)
Facilities: A cinderblock facility, SPC is identifiable in the community by the distinctive Cyrene (leaning) cross on the front lawn – a symbol for Jesus’ directive to “take up our crosses and follow him” – and by its bright blue doors.
The sanctuary, offices, and fellowship hall occupy the main building; the adjacent Kay Tyler Education Building has 7 classroom spaces that provide space for the nursery, primary-children’s and youth Sunday School classes, and a home for the Presbyterian Women of the Church and a variety of 12-Step groups including AA and Al-Anon. Girls Scout Troops meet in the fellowship hall. As a symbol of gratitude for the abundance of God, SPC is eager to welcome community groups seeking a place to meet regularly, occasionally or just one time.
Governance in the PCUSA is by an elected leadership team from the membership who are formed into what is called a “session.” The pastor is the Moderator of the session. SPC has a session of five members who oversee the particular areas of Christian Education, Facilities, Worship, Finance, and Mission & Outreach. Session members serve three year terms and may be elected for a second consecutive term. Work teams and mission group members may be made up of members and nonmembers; all are welcome to participate in any and all activities.
The structure and order of churches in the PCUSA is based on Scriptural principles as interpreted through a Book of Confessions that covers historical periods from near the time of Jesus to the last confession of faith written in 1989.
The Book of Order outlines the way in which congregations and more inclusive governing bodies operate in relationship to each other; it provides the framework for representative government upon which the PCUSA is based. The purpose of both books is to guide the church and its members into faithfully following the Way of Jesus Christ.
